Coaching Presence
What is coaching presence?
Coaching presence is the coach’s ability to be fully conscious, grounded, and attentive with the client, staying open, curious, and comfortable with uncertainty rather than rushing to fix or fill the silence. It is the quality of attention a coach brings, and it is one of the competencies within the ICF Core Competencies.
In plain terms, it is what it feels like to be with a coach who is completely there for you: unhurried, non-judgemental, and genuinely listening.
Why coaching presence matters
Presence is what makes the rest of coaching work. Without it, questions become mechanical and the client senses it. With it, the client feels safe enough to think honestly and go deeper. It is closely tied to trust and to active listening, and it is often what separates a technically correct coach from a genuinely effective one.
How coaches build presence
- Prepare and clear the mind. Arrive settled rather than distracted.
- Slow down. Allow silence and resist the urge to jump in.
- Manage self. Notice and set aside your own reactions and agenda.
- Practise mindfully. Presence deepens with reflection and coaching supervision.

FAQs
Is coaching presence a skill or a trait?
It is a developable skill and state, not a fixed trait. Coaches build it through preparation, self-management, and practice over time.
Why is presence part of the ICF competencies?
Because it underpins trust and effective coaching. Techniques only work when the coach is genuinely present, so ICF treats it as core.
How do you know a coach has strong presence?
You feel it: they are unhurried, attentive, non-judgemental, and comfortable with silence, and you feel safe to think openly.
