Ontological Coaching

    What is ontological coaching?

Ontological coaching is an approach that focuses on a person’s way of being, the underlying stance from which they perceive and act, rather than only their behaviour or goals. It works with three interconnected domains: language, emotion, and body, on the premise that shifting these shifts how a person shows up and what becomes possible for them.

It is a deeper, more transformational approach than purely goal-focused coaching, and it complements models such as co-active coaching.

    Why it matters

Some challenges are not solved by a new action plan but by a change in how a person sees themselves and their situation. Ontological coaching targets that deeper level, which can produce lasting shifts where surface-level techniques do not. It is often used in leadership development where a change in presence or mindset matters more than a specific task.

    How it works

    • Language. Exploring the stories, assumptions, and conversations that shape a person’s reality.
    • Emotion. Working with moods and emotions as part of how someone acts.
    • Body. Noticing physical patterns and posture as part of a way of being.
    • Shifting the observer. Helping the person become a different “observer” of their world, linked to cognitive reframing.
