Values

    What are values?

Values are the core principles and beliefs that matter most to a person or organisation and that guide how they behave and make decisions. Personal values might include things like honesty, growth, or autonomy; organisational values are the stated principles a company wants to live by. When actions align with values, people tend to feel more motivated and authentic; when they clash, it shows up as stress and disengagement.

Clarifying values is a common focus in coaching, because so much of motivation, decision-making, and fulfilment flows from them. It connects closely to work on the Wheel of Life and to life coaching.

    Why values matter

Values act as an internal compass. People who are clear on their values make decisions more confidently, set better boundaries, and experience more meaning in their work. For organisations, genuine shared values shape culture and behaviour far more than a poster on the wall does, and misalignment between stated and lived values is quickly noticed. Values also underpin ethical leadership and trust.

Values in coaching and at work

    • Clarifying personal values. A coach helps a person name what truly matters to them, often surfacing values they had not articulated.
    • Aligning decisions. Checking choices and goals against values so they feel right and sustainable.
    • Navigating conflict. Understanding where a values clash is driving tension or dissatisfaction.
    • Living organisational values. Helping leaders model the values they expect, supporting inclusive leadership and trust.
