Team Coaching

    What is team coaching?

Team coaching is coaching a whole team together, over time, to improve how they work as a collective: their shared goals, ways of working, relationships, and results. The client is the team as a system, not just the individuals in it, and the coach helps the team see and change its own dynamics.

It is distinct from coaching each member separately, because much of a team’s performance lives in the space between people, in trust, communication, and psychological safety.

    Why team coaching matters

Most meaningful work happens in teams, yet teams rarely get dedicated support to improve how they operate together. Team coaching helps a group align on purpose, surface and resolve tensions, and build the habits of a high-performing team, which lifts both results and the experience of being in the team. It is often used for leadership teams, newly formed teams, or teams facing significant change.

    How team coaching works

A team coach typically starts by understanding the team and its context, sometimes through interviews or diagnostics, then works with the team over a series of sessions on the goals and dynamics that matter most. Between sessions the team practises new ways of working, and the coach helps them reflect and adjust. It complements strong manager effectiveness rather than replacing it.

    Team coaching vs group coaching

Team coaching works with an intact team that shares goals and interdependence, focusing on how they perform together. Group coaching brings together individuals who are not necessarily a team, to learn from a shared coaching experience and from each other. The overlap is real, but the client, a team system versus a set of individuals, is different.

    FAQs

How is team coaching different from a team-building workshop?

Team building is usually a one-off event. Team coaching is an ongoing process that works on real goals and dynamics over time, aiming for lasting change rather than a single boost.

When should you use team coaching?

Common triggers include a new or reformed team, a leadership team wanting to work better together, or a team facing change, conflict, or ambitious goals.

Who is the client in team coaching?

The team as a whole system, rather than any single individual, which is what distinguishes it from one-to-one coaching.
