HRIS (Human Resource Information System)
What is an HRIS?
An HRIS, or human resource information system, is software that stores, manages, and processes employee data and core HR processes in one place. It is the system of record for the workforce, holding information such as personal details, roles, pay, time off, and org structure, and automating everyday HR administration.
It is the foundation of an organisation’s people-tech stack, and it increasingly connects to learning and development tools such as an LMS and an LXP, as well as to coaching platforms.
Why an HRIS matters
A single, reliable source of employee data reduces manual admin, improves accuracy, and gives People teams the information they need to make decisions. Good HRIS data also underpins workforce planning and a skills-based organization, since almost every people process depends on knowing who is who and what they do.
Core features
- Employee records. A central database of people, roles, and org structure.
- Core HR processes. Onboarding, time off, and personal data management.
- Payroll and benefits. Often integrated or connected.
- Reporting. People metrics and analytics drawn from the data.
HRIS vs LMS vs LXP
An HRIS manages core people data and processes. An LMS manages and delivers training. An LXP curates a more personalised, learner-led development experience. They serve different jobs and often integrate, with the HRIS as the system of record.

FAQs
What is the difference between an HRIS and an HRMS?
The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. An HRMS (human resource management system) sometimes describes a broader suite, but both centre on managing employee data and core HR processes.
Is an HRIS the same as payroll software?
No. Payroll may be part of or integrated with an HRIS, but an HRIS is broader, covering employee records, core HR processes, and reporting.
Does an HRIS handle training?
Usually not in depth. Training is the job of an LMS or LXP, which often integrate with the HRIS as the system of record.
