Codevelopment
What is codevelopment?
Codevelopment (professional codevelopment) is a structured peer-learning method in which a small group of people help one another improve their practice by working through real challenges together. In each session one member presents a real situation as the “client”, and the others act as “consultants”, asking questions and offering perspectives, following a defined set of steps. The approach was formalised by Adrien Payette and Claude Champagne.
It combines peer support with a clear process, sitting alongside group coaching and peer coaching as a way to develop people together.
Why codevelopment matters
Codevelopment turns a group’s collective experience into a structured development resource. Participants get practical help with real problems, learn from each other’s situations, and build reflective and questioning skills, all at a low cost per person. It also strengthens trust and networks across a group, which makes it valuable for cohorts of managers or peers.
How a codevelopment session works
A facilitated session typically follows defined steps: the client presents a real situation; consultants ask questions to understand it; the client clarifies what help they want; consultants share reactions, ideas, and suggestions; the client draws conclusions and an action plan; and the group reflects on what everyone learned.
Codevelopment vs group coaching
Both develop people in a group, but codevelopment follows a specific, structured method built around one member’s real problem per session, with peers acting as consultants. Group coaching is broader and coach-led, focused on each participant’s own goals. Codevelopment is more peer-driven and process-defined.
