Change Management
What is change management?
Change management is the structured approach to helping people and organisations move from a current state to a desired future state, so that a change actually delivers its intended benefits. It focuses on the human side of change: how people understand, accept, and adopt new ways of working, not just the technical or process side.
Because change succeeds or fails on whether people come with it, change management leans heavily on leadership, communication, and support, including coaching for the leaders steering it.
Why change management matters
Most change efforts fall short, and the reason is usually people rather than plans: resistance, unclear communication, or leaders who are not equipped to guide the transition. Good change management reduces disruption, speeds adoption, and protects engagement and wellbeing during periods that can otherwise cause stress and burnout. `[ADD CITED STAT on change initiative success rates]
Common models
- Kotter’s 8-Step Model. A sequence from creating urgency to anchoring change in the culture.
- ADKAR. Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, Reinforcement, focused on the individual’s journey.
- The change curve. Based on Kübler-Ross, describing the emotional stages people move through.
Whatever the model, leaders need the self-awareness and skills to guide others, which links change management to leadership development and resilience.

How does coaching help with change?
It helps leaders build the self-awareness, communication, and resilience to guide others through transition, and supports individuals in adapting to new ways of working.
