Well-being
What is well-being?
Well-being is the holistic sense of how well a person is doing across their life: their physical and mental health, emotional state, relationships, sense of purpose, and overall satisfaction. It is more than the absence of illness or stress; it is about feeling and functioning well. Well-being can be viewed at the level of the individual and, in a work setting, at the level of the organisation.
This page covers the broad, holistic concept. For the specifically workplace-focused view, see employee wellbeing, and for the capacity to cope with pressure, see resilience.
Why well-being matters
Well-being shapes almost everything: how people think, relate, perform, and sustain themselves over time. Higher well-being is associated with better focus, creativity, and relationships, while poor well-being undermines all of these and can lead to burnout. For individuals it is central to a good life; for organisations it is closely tied to engagement, performance, and retention.
Dimensions of well-being
- Physical. Health, energy, sleep, and movement.
- Mental and emotional. Managing stress, mood, and thoughts.
- Social. Quality of relationships and connection.
- Purpose and meaning. A sense that life and work matter, often linked to values.
