Manager Enablement
What is manager enablement?
Manager enablement is the set of tools, training and ongoing support an organisation provides to help managers do their job well: running 1:1 meetings, giving feedback, setting expectations and coaching their own teams. It replaces the old assumption that people will pick up management skills informally once they are promoted.
Why it matters
Managers are often promoted for being good at their previous job, not for being good at managing people, and the impact of that gap is large. Gallup’s research has found that managers account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores (Gallup, 2015). Investing in manager effectiveness is therefore one of the highest-leverage moves an organisation can make, because a manager’s habits shape the daily experience of everyone on their team, from employee engagement to retention.
What manager enablement includes
- Training on core skills. Delivering feedback, running productive 1:1s, setting clear goals and handling conflict.
- In-the-flow support. Prompts and guidance available when a manager needs them, increasingly inside tools such as Microsoft Teams or Slack rather than a separate portal.
- Coaching for managers themselves. Giving managers their own human or AI coach, so they are supported over time, not trained once and left to it.
- Practice. Safe rehearsal of hard conversations, for example through AI roleplays, before the real thing.
- Culture and expectations. Enablement works best alongside a coaching culture, where coaching behaviours are modelled by senior leaders and expected, not only taught.
Example
A company rolls out manager enablement to every new people manager: a short training on running 1:1s, AI coaching prompts before those meetings, monthly practice of a difficult conversation, and access to a human coach for harder situations. Six months in, HR compares engagement and turnover in their teams with the previous cohort, rather than relying on a single onboarding session that was never revisited. The data then shapes the next cohort: which moments needed more support, and which tools managers actually used.
How to get started
Start with the moments that matter most for your managers, such as a first 1:1, a performance conversation or a team change, and design support around those moments rather than around a course catalogue. Agree two or three outcomes to track, such as team engagement, regretted attrition and upward feedback on the manager. Keep the support light enough that busy managers will actually use it: a short prompt before a meeting fits a manager’s week far better than a long module they have to schedule. Involve senior leaders early, because managers copy what their own managers do. Finally, connect enablement to the wider manager as coach agenda, so managers see coaching their people as part of the job rather than an extra task.

FAQs
Is manager enablement the same as management training?
Training is usually one part of it. Manager enablement also includes ongoing support, practice and coaching, rather than a single training event.
How is manager enablement different from manager effectiveness?
Manager effectiveness describes how well managers actually lead their teams. Manager enablement is what the organisation does to improve it: the training, tools, practice and coaching that help managers become more effective.
Who should manager enablement reach?
Typically every people manager, not only senior leaders, since day-to-day team experience is shaped most directly by first-line and middle managers.
How is manager enablement measured?
Common signals include team engagement scores, retention, upward feedback and manager effectiveness ratings, tracked over time as enablement is rolled out.
