Leadership Coaching
What is leadership coaching?
Leadership coaching is a one-to-one development partnership that helps managers and leaders at any level improve how they lead: their self-awareness, decision-making, communication, and ability to get the best from others. Like all coaching it is largely non-directive, using questions and reflection to help the leader find their own way forward rather than handing them answers.
It sits within the wider practice of leadership development and shares its foundations with executive coaching, differing mainly in who it serves.
Why leadership coaching matters
Leaders shape the experience, engagement, and performance of everyone they manage, so improving how they lead has a multiplied effect. Coaching is uniquely suited to this because it is personalised: it works on the specific behaviours and blind spots of the individual, rather than teaching everyone the same content. It is often triggered by a promotion, a stretch challenge, or themes from 360-degree feedback.
How leadership coaching works
A coach and leader agree goals, then meet regularly over several months, often using frameworks such as the GROW model. The leader experiments between sessions and is held accountable for what they commit to, with progress reviewed against the original goals. Skilled coaches work to recognised standards such as the ICF Core Competencies.
Leadership coaching vs executive coaching
The two overlap heavily. Executive coaching usually refers to coaching for senior leaders and executives, where the stakes and complexity are highest. Leadership coaching is the broader term, covering leaders at every level, including first-time and mid-level managers. In practice, the method is much the same; the difference is seniority and context.
